Ballet Cymru Join Disabled Dancers to Animate Historic Medieval Priory

A pioneering dance performance will take place in Blackfriars Priory in Gloucester on October 13 and 14 in a groundbreaking new venture.

Stuck in the Mud features a cast of disabled and non-disabled professional dancers, musicians and over 100 dancers from the local community.

The work, produced by GDance, has been choreographed to fit the surroundings of the refurbished Blackfriars Priory. The music has been specially commissioned by a rising star composer, jack White, recommended by Cheltenham Music Festival’s Director, Meurig Bowen.

The show received its premiere at the National Trust’s Hidcote Manor Gardens and received rapturous reviews. After its two-day stop at Blackfriars Priory in Gloucester, it moves on to Newport in Wales.  A European tour is envisaged in 2014.

Quotes collected from the audience at Hidcote included:
“I found the whole experience magical and overwhelming”

“Hugely thought provoking. Dream like. Beautiful”
“Lyrical and beautiful! Quite a magical experience!”
The venture is made possible by a unique collaboration between the National Trust and two dance organisations that share a commitment to work with disabled dance artists: Ballet Cymru and GDance.

Choreographed by renowned disabled choreographer Marc Brew, Stuck in the Mud consists of an hour-long dance experience and aims to reinforce positive impressions of the talents of disabled people.

Brew has created dance all over the world. He was guest collaborator and media spokesperson for the London handover ceremony at the Beijing Olympics, and was hailed in Time Out magazine as ‘the best of the new breed of London’s rising dance talent’.

Stuck in the Mud is financed by the National Trust, Arts Council England and Arts Council of Wales.

Artistic Director of Ballet Cymru Darius James said: “Ballet Cymru is committed to breaking down boundaries and making ballet more accessible. Working again with choreographer Marc Brew is a wonderful opportunity for our dancers and it has long been a goal to work more closely with GDance.”

The lead partner, GDance is based in Colwell Road, Gloucester, and is internationally renowned for its work with dance and disability.
