A group of young people living with Type 1
Diabetes are buzzing after spending their October half-term week with inspiring
professional artists to make a short dance film with GDance Productions.
The project, funded by the NHS
Gloucestershire Cultural Commissioning Group and set up by Create Gloucetershire, immersed the young participants
in a range of creative activities to co-produce their own film.

They
worked alongside GDance Productions’ Project Manager Karen Perrins, London
based dance-for-camera artists The Motion Dance Collective and talented Gloucester-based
rapper Alluzeion (aka Shaquille Douglas).
During the week, the group talked about the
impact their Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis had on their lives and the importance of
taking their medication.
They were able to choose their own role
within the project; some wrote and recorded song lyrics for the music track,
others created and performed dance and the rest supported the production with
filming and design. The final day involved on-site filming inspired by
Gloucester Docks and the City Centre.

Feedback so far evidences the positive impact
that dance and the arts can have on young people with Type 1 Diabetes, both
physically and emotionally.
The group fed back the value of meeting other young people living with Type 1 Diabetes and hearing about each other’s experiences, all while learning new skills and having fun! One parent commented:
“(it was) a massive boost to her confidence
and help for her diabetes and mental health too!”
We are looking forward to seeing the final
film and sharing this with other young people to raise awareness the condition
and the importance of taking medication.
Thank you to everyone that was involved!
